Hi Kelly, I absolutely loved your presentation! The concept of grief and disaster being unavoidable in life is something I found really interesting. I agree completely that joy and pain go hand in hand and you can’t experience one without the other. The train of thought for your presentation was easy to follow. Beginning with the Ellen video about choosing a lane, then transitioning to Robert Frost’s, The Road Not Taken, was very clever. I love that you created your own miniature allegory of crossroads and street lanes symbolizing decision making inside of your presentation. I also felt that you related deeply to your topic and your novel as you spoke easily and with fluidity. It is refreshing to see someone present with visible passion and I really appreciated that. The concept of twins in decision making is something incredibly interesting that I had never considered. Where most people close a door of experiences and opportunities when they make one decision, they will never know what laid beyond that door. However in the case of your novel the author used the double experience of the twins to make his decision. Overall really strong presentation, great job!
Firstly, I really enjoyed your introductory video and am glad that you chose a humorous monologue to plunge into a deeper interpretation of the theme of decision making. It definitely allowed us, as an audience, to relate more to the topic before analyzing it further. One of the noteworthy features I noticed in your presentation, even as I reviewed it after, was the evident complexity present in all your thesis statements. You went beyond the superficial meaning of the text and applied Edwards' own philosophies into the evaluation of the text. I learned that the choice of perspective was significant in the characterization techniques that the author uses while maintaining the theme of a "less traveled road". Furthermore, the Robert Frost poem only reinforced your argument throughout the presentation rather than complicate its purpose. While many others chose to relate the poem to the actual plot of the prose passage, I admire your decision to convey the theme and argument itself through Frost's poem.
Hi Kelly! I think the pink was an interesting style choice. Having Ellen start also helped give us a strong introduction. I think choosing to focus on decision making lead to many possible avenues of exploration for you. I think it was interesting you did The Namesake prompt for your open essay, it sort of bookended this whole year. Start with The Namesake, end with it. I also liked how you choose a poem we likely knew, it made me rethink how I understood it. I think that you could improve by reading off the slides less; you tended to do that during the presentation. Overall, I think it went well.
Hey Kelly! I really enjoyed your emphasis on choice. It reminded me of my own presentation because we both chose to tackle a widely known yet still incredibly complex theme. The Ellen bit was awesome and the poem, too--I love how you incorporated a widely known celebrity and poet; you really connected with your audience because we all knew both of those. I think you are very talented and your presentation was very engaging. Thanks for sharing your perspective and giving me a book to add to my need-to-read list! Well done.
I really loved your inclusion of the Ellen DeGeneres clip. Not only was it entertaining and perfect for the target audience, but it fit extremely well with the major theme addressed throughout the presentation. As the importance of decision making was discussed in the presentation, the video definitely reinforced this idea because even though the decision Ellen discussed in the video--something as simple as deciding which lane to drive in-- it shows that we face decision making every day. I also liked the other visual representations such as the frame from the film version of the book to keep the audience engaged in the presentation. Great job!
